Rodgers & Hammerstein's State Fair

A Note From The REV’s
Producing Artistic Director

By now, you may have heard the news:  we have cancelled the remainder of the run of our current production, State Fair.   Tough moment for the theatre.

Our cast was hit hard with this new covid surge.  And while we deployed all of our well-prepared backup plans, for all of last week, contagion continued.  Yesterday, the health of our employees became our sole focus.  As such, I made the simple and clear decision to cancel the remaining shows to protect and preserve them.

Trust me — this was very much a last option.  As a professional organization, we are governed by many theatrical unions — each of which has their own rules, regulations and protocols.  Yes, there’s almost always a way to get the show on, but for me, this moment is about humanity.  Making a choice to push forward with the show means sacrificing something else — and that’s not how we work — it’s not in line with my ethics as an arts leader and it’s not in line with The REV’s priorities or governance.  Theatre is only possible with people — healthy people.  We must prioritize them first — and the show second.

Our wonderful and caring Box Office Team will be in touch to work with each of you re: your unused tickets.  Please be patient with us as we work through thousands of patrons.  If you are a subscriber, thank you for your loyalty — we appreciate you so very much.  Nothing changes for Ain’t Misbehavin’.  This hilarious song and dance celebration opens September 21st and plays through October 11th.

We will miss our State Fair.  For those of you were not able to see it, we are sorry.  It was a beautiful production centered around family, young love, and chasing your dreams.  Its characters navigate what life brings and figure out how to adjust.  We are taking a lesson and following suit.

For those of you who were able to see it, thank you for supporting live theatre.  We need you now as much as we did in 2020 — perhaps more.

Always,

Brett Smock
Producing Artistic Director
